NatGeo to Release ‘Jaws’ Documentary for Streaming on Disney+ and Hulu on July 11
National Geographic is gearing up for an exciting new documentary on the classic movie Jaws, marking its 50th anniversary this year. The documentary titled “Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story” will be available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu starting July 11. This follows its premiere on NatGeo as part of its annual Sharkfest.
Directed by filmmaker Laurent Bouzereau, this 90-minute documentary promises to take viewers on a deep dive into the film’s journey from Peter Benchley’s bestselling novel to a beloved pop culture icon. Produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Documentaries and Nedland Films, in collaboration with Wendy Benchley and Laura Bowling, this summer’s documentary is the only authorized production on the making of Jaws. Steven Spielberg himself, the acclaimed director behind the film, plays a pivotal role in revisiting the story that kickstarted his career, maintaining creative control over the film for the past 50 years.
An exciting aspect of this documentary is the inclusion of never-before-seen footage from Spielberg’s and Benchley’s personal archives, offering a sneak peek behind the scenes with home videos and rare outtakes. Spielberg candidly recounts the tumultuous production journey, from technical mishaps with the mechanical shark to weather-related delays, his own post-production anxieties, and the concerns he had about the film affecting his career. The documentary also sheds light on the ripple effect of fear caused by Jaws and reframes it as a legacy of wonder, curiosity, and enduring respect for these majestic creatures.
In addition to Spielberg’s insights, the documentary features exclusive interviews with original cast and crew members such as production designer Joe Alves, screenwriter Carl Gottlieb, actress Lorraine Gary, and more. Modern-day filmmakers and super fans like J.J. Abrams, Emily Blunt, and James Cameron also weigh in on the impact of Jaws on their work and the wider cinematic landscape.
Beyond the film industry, Jaws @ 50 delves into the real-life inspiration behind Benchley’s novel with interviews from his family members and provides a platform for leading marine advocates and scientists to discuss how Jaws transformed public perception of sharks, sparking conservation efforts that continue to this day. Stay tuned for this immersive documentary experience coming soon to Disney+ and Hulu.
