Noma Dumezweni credits Josette Simon for inspiring her acting career

Noma Dumezweni, known for her role in “Only Murders in the Building,” is now starring in Apple TV’s new sci-fi series, “Murderbot,” alongside Alexander Skarsgård. In the show, her character, Dr. Mensah, leads a team of scientists on a mission to survey a dangerous alien planet, facing numerous challenges along the way.

During an exclusive interview with RadioTimes.com, Dumezweni discussed the importance of representation in sci-fi and shared how the iconic character Josette Simon from “Blake’s 7” inspired her when she was young. Seeing someone who looked like her on screen made her believe that a career in acting was possible.

Dumezweni, who has previously portrayed Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter stage play “The Cursed Child” and Queen Selina in Disney’s live-action “Little Mermaid,” emphasized the significance of seeing oneself reflected in narratives not just emotionally, but also physically and environmentally. Representation, she explained, is about recognizing one’s humanity and identity in the stories we consume.
