Netflix Founder Joins Board of AI Company Anthropic

Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings has recently accepted a position on the board of directors at Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence company known for developing the popular Claude large language models. The appointment was made by the Long Term Benefit Trust, which holds the authority to nominate some of Anthropic’s board members.

Commenting on the decision, Buddy Shah, chair of Anthropic’s Long Term Benefit Trust, highlighted Hastings’ exceptional leadership background, extensive philanthropic contributions, and dedication to tackling the societal issues posed by AI. These qualities make him the perfect fit to guide Anthropic as it navigates a crucial stage in AI advancement.

Hastings’ reputation precedes him in the entertainment industry, having played a pivotal role in transforming Netflix from a DVD rental service to a global streaming behemoth during his tenure as co-CEO. His recent departure from the company has allowed him to focus on the potential and challenges of AI, exemplified by his $50 million donation to Bowdoin College to establish the Hastings Initiative for AI and Humanity.
