CoComelon shifts to Disney+ amid declining viewership
Parents whose kids love CoComelon might have to consider adding another streaming service to their lineup, as the popular preschool show is set to leave Netflix for Disney+. CoComelon, a 3D animated series featuring nursery rhymes and original songs, has been a hit on YouTube since 2006, garnering 193 million subscribers and was acquired by Candle Media in 2021.
Since its arrival on Netflix in 2020, CoComelon has been a go-to for preschool entertainment, consistently ranking high in viewership. However, according to Deadline, the show’s viewership on Netflix has declined by 60% from 2023 to 2024, leading to the decision to move the series to Disney+ in 2027.
Disney+ seems to be investing heavily in children’s content, with titles like Bluey and Spidey and His Amazing Friends already in their catalog. The Wrap reports that Disney is expected to pay “tens of millions” for the rights to stream each season of CoComelon. In addition, a CoComelon movie is slated to release in cinemas in the same year the series makes its Disney+ debut.
CoComelon was created by former advertising executive Jay Jeon and his wife in 2005, who started uploading videos to YouTube under the name “ABCkidTV.” The show’s popularity grew rapidly, leading to its acquisition by Moonbug Entertainment in 2020 and later by Candle Media. The couple aimed to create characters that are relatable and likable, building a family dynamic around the main characters like JJ, YoYo, and TomTom.
The move of CoComelon to Disney+ marks a significant shift in the preschool entertainment landscape, and parents will soon have another option for streaming their children’s favorite shows.
