Wheel of Time Season 4 Cancelled: Prime Video’s Decision Explained
Prime Video’s fantasy series, The Wheel of Time, has been canceled after the conclusion of its third season. The show, based on Robert Jordan’s book series, premiered in 2021 to high viewership and solid reviews from critics.
Featuring acclaimed actors like Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney, and Sophie Okonedo, the show garnered a broad appeal. Despite many considering the most recent season the best so far, Prime Video has decided not to renew it due to financial reasons.
With overall viewership decreasing by the third season and the high cost of production, Prime Video was reluctant to continue financing the show. The platform has other high-budget productions like The Boys, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and Fallout to focus on, along with the recent acquisition of the James Bond franchise.
According to Nielsen’s Top 10 Originals chart, The Wheel of Time dropped out after three weeks in the latest season, compared to the first two seasons that remained in the list for their full runs. This drop in viewership in one of Prime Video’s largest markets suggests a challenging future for the show.
Despite the cancellation, Prime Video and lead studio Sony TV are still pushing for an Emmy campaign for the third season. Fans may find some closure in how the third season was handled, even though the news of the cancellation is undoubtedly disappointing.
