Michelle Williams Describes Living with Ryan Gosling on Set of 2010 Film as ‘Horrible’
Michelle Williams recently reflected on her experience working with Ryan Gosling on the 2010 film Blue Valentine, describing it as “horrible.” The film follows the story of Cindy and Dean and their relationship, depicting the highs and lows of their marriage.
During a podcast episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard and Monica Padman, Williams shared the challenges she faced while working with Gosling. The director, Derek Cianfrance, wanted to transition their characters from love to conflict, leading to a unique approach. He called for a two-week break in filming and suggested that Williams and Gosling live together to simulate a real married couple. This forced cohabitation, along with improvised scenarios and arguments, aimed to bring authenticity to their performances.
Williams described the experience as “horrible,” expressing guilt for the production pause and impact on the crew. Despite the challenges, her performance earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination, while Gosling received a Golden Globe nomination for his role.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time a star has shared an awkward acting situation with Gosling. Jessica Biel recalled auditioning for The Notebook covered in fake blood while shooting Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Although she didn’t land the role, Biel described the experience as a “very strange, a very Hollywood moment.”
It’s clear that the process of bringing characters to life on screen can involve unexpected challenges and unique methods. Williams and Gosling’s commitment to their roles in Blue Valentine showcases the dedication required in the art of acting.
