Review of Apple’s Epic: ‘Fountain of Youth’ – What If Indiana Jones Was Annoying?
If you’ve ever found yourself wanting to hang out with the hero of a fun adventure movie, then you might want to steer clear of John Krasinski’s Luke Pardue in “Fountain of Youth.” This treasure hunter is one of the least likable adventurers to grace the screen, with a smug attitude that somehow manages to be both unlikable and grating. Even his attempts at flirting come off as cringeworthy, to say the least.
Luke’s relationship with his sister, played by Natalie Portman, is not much better. He wreaks havoc in her life, jeopardizing her career and potentially even her relationship with her son. It’s hard to root for a hero who seems more concerned with his own interests than those of the people around him.
The premise of the film follows Luke and his team on a hunt for the Fountain of Youth, a mythical source of eternal life and healing. Despite the fantastical elements, the film struggles to make these larger-than-life ideas feel believable. The world-building falls short, leaving the audience feeling disconnected from the story.
Directed by Guy Ritchie, “Fountain of Youth” does have its moments of excitement and action. However, even the best camerawork and thrilling sequences can’t make up for a lackluster script. John Krasinski’s portrayal of Luke comes off as condescending and self-serving, making it hard to root for him as the hero of the story.
In the end, “Fountain of Youth” might offer some fleeting entertainment for those looking for a light-hearted adventure. But if you’re hoping for a compelling hero and a gripping story, you may find yourself disappointed. Sometimes, a flashy premise and a talented cast aren’t enough to save a film from its own shortcomings.
