Jason Momoa switches from peace to violence during Hawaiian unification and colonization
Jason Momoa and AppleTV+ are teaming up once again for Chief of War, an exciting historical drama that delves into the unification and colonization of Hawai’i from an Indigenous perspective. The show, set in the late 18th century, follows warrior Ka’iana, played by Momoa, as he battles to unify the Hawaiian islands before Western colonization. The first look at Chief of War was revealed in a teaser trailer released by Apple TV+.
Momoa not only stars in Chief of War but also writes and executive produces the series. With a predominantly Polynesian cast, including Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, and many others, the show is a passion project for Momoa and co-creator Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, who both have native Hawaiian roots. The nine-episode series will debut globally on Apple TV+ starting August 1, 2025, with new episodes airing every Friday.

The show is produced by FIFTH SEASON and Chernin Entertainment, with Momoa directing the season finale and serving as executive producer. The series boasts a score co-produced by Grammy and Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer, setting the tone for the gripping tale of Chief of War.
