Étoile Editor Tim Streeto: Reuniting with the Palladinos for Prime Video Ballet Series
Tim Streeto, the editor of Étoile, was thrilled to work with Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino again after their successful collaboration on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which earned Streeto three Emmy Award nominations. He shared in an interview with Gold Derby that when the Palladinos approached him for their new show, he eagerly accepted the opportunity.
The series, streaming on Prime Video, follows the story of Jack McMillan, played by Luke Kirby, the artistic director of the New York Metropolitan Ballet, and Geneviève Lavigne, played by Charlotte Gainsbourg, the interim artistic director of Le Ballet National in Paris. Together, they aim to revive interest in ballet by swapping companies. What makes Étoile unique is Sherman-Palladino’s personal connection to ballet, having been trained in the art form as a child, adding a meta layer to the show.
Streeto made a conscious effort to approach Étoile as a fresh project, distinct from Mrs. Maisel. He delved into the world of ballet, seeking inspiration from contemporary performances on platforms like YouTube and collaborating closely with the choreographer and Sherman-Palladino herself to capture the essence of ballet authentically.
One of Streeto’s key takeaways from working on the series was the realization that the traditional depiction of ballet on screen as delicate and graceful overlooks the immense strength and physicality required of dancers. He observed the dancers’ remarkable power, flexibility, and dedication, challenging the stereotype of ballet as a purely aesthetic and dainty art form.
Étoile provides a refreshing and insightful perspective on ballet, showcasing the physical prowess and dedication of its performers while telling a compelling story of artistic ambition and collaboration. The series is a must-watch for fans of dance and drama on Prime Video.
