Streaming Video Collection Development and Management with BU Libraries
Michael Fernandez, Head of Technical Services for the BU Libraries, is all about making sure that library resources are easy to find and use for the BU community. Recently, he co-authored a book with Amauri Serrano from Yale University Library that dives into the world of streaming video collection development and management. This book, called Streaming Video Collection Development and Management, is now available at BU Libraries.
When Michael started thinking about this book, back in 2019, the landscape of streaming media in libraries was rapidly changing. More and more faculty and students were requesting access to streaming videos for classes and assignments. Then, when the pandemic hit in 2020, the need for streaming video skyrocketed. Michael and Amauri found themselves facing new challenges in acquiring niche videos and making them available to users.
Their experiences at Yale led them to create a manual that outlines best practices for managing streaming media in libraries of all sizes and types. They wanted to share their knowledge with library professionals facing similar challenges. The book includes real-world perspectives from librarians at different types of libraries to give a wide range of insights.
Looking ahead, Michael sees streaming video heading toward subscription-based models, similar to e-books. He hopes to explore options for local file hosting and put the principles from the book into action with practical licensing workflows.
In his role at BU Libraries, Michael oversees electronic resources and physical collections, ensuring that everything runs smoothly for library users. If you’re interested in learning more about streaming video collection development and management or want to dive into the future of streaming media, Michael’s book is a great resource to get you started.
