It also serves as a respite following the traumatic events in Antwerp. Although it might be a bit too much of a rest. The lack of action makes you focus on the various storylines MobLand is juggling, but not all of them are engaging. The Harrigans are featured players in the story, but there is hardly any of them worth rooting for. Conrad is a skeevy old man meddling in the lives of his people’s wives. Maeve is two-faced and scheming within the family. Eddie is an arrogant prick who started the drama, and his mom is out making her own shady deals. Even the arguably one member who isn’t completely awful, Kevin, is out pursuing revenge. It’s fine under other circumstances, but we’re lead to believe there is a tense war going on, and mostly everyone is out pursuing their own selfish agendas. In crime dramas, the gangsters make bad look cool. Unfortunately, they are merely bad.ezstandalone.cmd.push(function(){ezstandalone.showAds(909)});Tom Hardy as Harry Da Souza does his best to carry MobLand. He expertly threads the needle between threatening and humble on several occasions. During a time where paranoia is high, he convinces Conrad of his loyalty and his aptitude of juggling his various responsibilities. When he confronts Eddie, he tiptoes the line of stern father without being completely disrespectful. The cool dad routine is enough to get Eddie’s guard down, and then he returns and hits back with a threat at the end. Only Harry has the standing to be able to speak that way to his employer’s grandson without any punishment.Photo: Luke Varley/Paramount+The show continues to expand the world. First, building upon the mystique and notoriety surrounding Kat McAllister. She is someone who has sway across the entire criminal underworld, and her presence puts the entire Harrigan and Stevenson squabble into perspective. They are all small fish compared to her. Moving forward, it’s intriguing to learn about her particular interest in Harry. Maybe it could lead to a job change, and we won’t have to hear about the Harrigans anymore.Similarly, the episode enhances the legend that is Richie Stevenson. During war, you find allies in the most unexpected places. The proposal starts off as a suggestion from a consultant, and through each related scene, the subplot gradually builds thanks in part to a convincing performance from guest star Toby Jones. You can feel the disdain in his voice and the fishing metaphor lends credibility to his ideas. Especially, in the bigger picture, it plays with a recurring theme of the series. ezstandalone.cmd.push(function(){ezstandalone.showAds(910)});MobLand, like in this episode, can be frustrating, but there are moments of brilliance that can change your mind and give you hope. The closing scene with Richie is genuinely unexpected. It briefly leaves you shocked at the start, but the reveal at the end helps make it all make sense. In the process it only raises Richie’s stature knowing his real influence. The best parts of “Helter Skelter” are those that don’t involve the Harrigans, which is sad since they are main characters and involve much of the star power. The episode continues some good world building and character development of their rival and the recently introduced power player Kat McAllister. New episodes of MobLand release Sundays on Paramount+.‘MobLand’ episode 8 review: Unexpected allies and outcomesMobLand E 8 review: ‘Helter Skelter’The best parts of “Helter Skelter” are those that don’t involve the Harrigans, which is sad since they are main characters and involve much of the star power.
