GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — Grand Prairie police arrested a documented gang member early Saturday morning and charged him with murder after he reportedly crashed into another car, killing the driver, during a police chase, officials say.

An officer was patrolling at about 1:45 a.m. in the 1100 block of East Main Street when he saw a Chevrolet Camaro, according to police. That Camaro, upon seeing the officer, reportedly slowed down and started changing lanes and turning to try and lose him.

Believing the Camaro to be stolen, police say the officer tried to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation. After pulling into a parking lot, the suspect immediately fled as the officer started exiting his car. This lead to a pursuit down eastbound I-30.

As the suspect, 26-year-old Llonis Arevalo, began exiting at Hampton Road South, police say he collided with a stranded vehicle that had been disabled in a traffic lane.

After crashing, Arevalo and an unknown passenger reportedly tried running away, police say, but were ultimately arrested after backup officers arrived.

Arevalo was taken to a hospital after telling officers he’d taken fentanyl, police say, and he was treated and released. The passenger hasn’t been found.

The driver of the disabled vehicle was taken to a local trauma center with serious injuries, which they later died from, police say. Their identity will be released once the next of kin has been notified.

In addition to murder, police charged Arevalo with evading arrest causing death, resisting arrest and collision causing death. Arevalo had been out on bond on felony offenses, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary of a habitation, police say.
