Paul Hunter’s Surreal Streaming Series “Government Cheese”: A Tribute to Family

Paul Hunter, the co-creator of the Apple TV+ comedy-drama series “Government Cheese,” shared in a recent interview how the show was inspired by his own childhood and family experiences. The series is set in 1969 in California’s San Fernando Valley and follows the character Hampton Chambers, portrayed by David Oyelowo. After finding religion in prison, Hampton invents a self-sharpening drill, named the “Bit Magician” by his son Einstein, as part of his journey to reconnect with his wife and sons upon his release.

Hunter shared that Hampton’s character was inspired by his father, who had been incarcerated but maintained a positive outlook and a strong sense of community. The series aims to portray Black characters in a unique light, highlighting their quirkiness and resilience.

Throughout the interview, Hunter emphasized the importance of showcasing characters like Hampton who navigate challenges with humor and determination, drawing from his own family’s experiences.
