The lead role in the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot has been officially announced, with Ryan Kiera Armstrong taking on the iconic character. Sarah Michelle Gellar, who will be executive producing and reprising her role as Buffy Summers, shared the exciting news with Armstrong on Instagram. Gellar asked Armstrong if she wanted to help save the world and if she wanted to be her chosen one, to which an emotional Armstrong tearfully accepted and thanked Gellar for trusting her with the role.
Armstrong, known for her roles in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and the Firestarter remake, is set to star alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar in the reboot. In addition to her role in the Buffy reboot, Armstrong will also be appearing in a guest role in Owen Wilson’s Apple TV+ golf comedy series Stick, as well as starring alongside Ethan Hawke in FX’s The Lowdown.
The reboot, which received a pilot order at Hulu, is being helmed by showrunners Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, who previously worked on Poker Face season 1. The Zuckermans expressed their excitement over having found this generation’s slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong, praising her as the perfect choice for the role. Chloé Zhao, an Oscar winner, will be executive producing and directing the pilot, while plot details are being kept under wraps.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003 and can be streamed in its entirety on Hulu or Disney+. The new reboot promises to bring a fresh take on the beloved series, with a high-school student slayer at the center of the story. Fans of the original series and newcomers alike can look forward to the next chapter in the Buffyverse from 20th Television and Searchlight TV.
