Ncuti Gatwa’s Impact on Doctor Who Deserves Recognition
In recent years, I’ve been tiptoeing around the Doctor Who fandom, hesitating to fully dive in. The uneven release schedule, with the UK getting episodes before the US, often led to frustrating spoilers on social media. However, when Disney partnered with the BBC to air the show globally on a consistent schedule, I was eager to rekindle my interest. Plus, I was already a fan of Ncuti Gatwa from his role on Sex Education.
Watching the five episodic specials that bridged the gap between the 13th Doctor and the 14th, played by Gatwa, felt like catching up on homework. It was a fun refresher to witness the Doctor’s regeneration and the dynamic with Donna. The introduction of Gatwa’s Time Lord and his first companion Ruby Sunday, portrayed by Millie Gibson, launched us into thrilling space adventures.
While there have been some standout episodes, like the Bridgerton-themed one featuring Jonathan Groff as the Doctor’s love interest, the series occasionally struggles with recycled ideas and unresolved storylines. Gatwa’s portrayal of the first Black Time Lord brings a fresh perspective that isn’t always fully realized, especially in episodes exploring societal perceptions.
Amid Disney’s recent steps back in representation, finding Doctor Who on Disney+ hasn’t been as straightforward as expected. The lack of visibility and advertising for the show on the platform is disappointing. It’s a missed opportunity considering Gatwa’s magnetic presence, which truly drives the show and makes viewers feel connected to the characters.
I’ve been pondering why Disney hasn’t capitalized on the existing Doctor Who fandom, especially at their theme parks. Hosting after-dark events featuring the Doctor and companions could be a fantastic way to engage with fans and attract new ones. Embracing Doctor Who as part of their fandom offerings could bring a fresh wave of excitement to the show.
Despite rumors circulating about potential cancellation, Doctor Who’s current era deserves recognition for its potential and engaging storytelling. Gatwa’s on-screen chemistry, especially with Varada Sethu as Belinda Chandra, has been a highlight of recent episodes. It’s a shame that the show, despite airing on a platform as vast as Disney+, isn’t getting the attention it deserves.
Gatwa’s portrayal as the Fifteenth Doctor is captivating and injects a sense of joy into each adventure, making the show a must-watch. Hopefully, Disney will continue to showcase Doctor Who in a way that attracts both new and old fans, keeping the magic of the Doctor alive and thriving in the cultural conversation.
