Max to Crack Down on Password Sharing Gradually
Max has some news for its users – they’ll be clamping down on password sharing. But don’t worry, they’re doing it gradually, so you have time to adjust. The streaming service, owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, is introducing a new Extra Member Add-On feature, allowing primary account holders to add an extra user to their account for $7.99 a month.
This feature was launched last month, but the rollout will take some time. Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO and president of global streaming and games, JB Perrette, mentioned during an earnings call that it could take a year or more to fully implement. The company will start by softly encouraging users to add extra members, with messaging becoming more assertive as the year progresses and into 2026.
If users are found violating the rules, like sharing accounts outside of their household, Max has the right to modify access or disable features, according to their terms of service. They will be using account information, profile information, IP addresses, device IDs, and user activity to monitor this, similar to how Netflix operates.
Disney+ also offers a paid sharing plan, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Max, with 122.3 million subscribers by the end of the first quarter, offers different pricing tiers – $9.99 a month/$99.99 a year for the ad-based tier, $16.99 a month/$169.99 a year for the ad-free Standard plan, and $20.99 a month/$209.99 a year for the Premium ad-free plan with 4K streaming and Dolby Atmos sound.
So, keep an eye out for messages from Max about adding extra users, and remember to check your account sharing habits to avoid any disruptions.
