85th Annual Peabody Award Winners Revealed by UGA Today
The winners of the 85th annual Peabody Awards have been announced, showcasing the most compelling and inspiring stories from broadcasting and streaming media in 2024. Chosen from over 1,000 entries across various categories, these awards celebrate storytelling that covers a wide range of contemporary and historical topics, ranging from global issues to entertainment that brings communities together.
Netflix led the pack with six wins, followed by HBO/Max with four, PBS with three, and several others with multiple awards. Documentaries dominated this year with 12 wins, while entertainment, interactive/immersive programming, podcasts/radio, and news each received multiple honors.
Special awards were also announced, with Andrea Mitchell receiving the Peabody Career Achievement Award and “Saturday Night Live” winning the Institutional Award. The winners will be celebrated on June 1 at a ceremony in Los Angeles, hosted by Roy Wood Jr. This event marks the second year that the Peabody Awards ceremony will be held in LA.
The ceremony will be produced by Bob Bain Productions and sponsored by Delta, with Variety as the media partner. The Peabody Awards are based at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
Among the winners are outstanding programs like “Photographer” from National Geographic, “Out of My Mind” on Disney+, and “Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story” on CRAVE, to name a few. In various categories like arts, children’s/youth, documentary, entertainment, and more, these winning works represent the best in storytelling and visual media.
The Peabody Awards, celebrating 85 years of honoring stories that promote public interest and empathy, continue to showcase exceptional storytelling that expands our understanding of the world. Established in 1940 and currently housed at the University of Georgia, these prestigious awards recognize excellence in broadcasting and streaming entertainment.
