Watch Comedy Directed by Marietta Brothers Streaming on Hulu
Co-directors Isaiah and Yassir Lester recently celebrated the completion of their film “The Gutter,” a comedy now available for streaming on Hulu. The movie follows a quirky bowler’s quest to save a local bowling alley and features a star-studded cast including Susan Sarandon, Shameik Moore, D’Arcy Carden, and Paul Reiser.
Originally from Marietta, Georgia, Yassir Lester credits his hometown for inspiring the film’s humor and storytelling. He and his brother Isaiah, who co-directed the movie, both grew up in Marietta, attending local schools and spending their summers working odd jobs around the city.
Yassir, who kickstarted his career in stand-up comedy, eventually moved to Los Angeles to pursue opportunities in film and television. Isaiah, on the other hand, briefly returned to Georgia before studying at Vancouver Film School and transitioning into a successful writing career in New York.
Despite their individual paths, the brothers always dreamed of working together on a film, and “The Gutter” was a culmination of that shared ambition. Influenced by their experiences in Marietta and beyond, the movie is filled with nods to their upbringing, featuring inside jokes and familiar faces from their hometown.
The idea for “The Gutter” was born during late-night bowling sessions in California, where the brothers observed a unique mix of characters frequenting the alley. This diverse cast of bowlers inspired the film’s storyline, which centers around a disruptor named Walt, played by Shameik Moore.
Filled with humor and heart, “The Gutter” is a testament to the Lester brothers’ shared creative vision and their deep connection to their roots in Marietta. Each scene is infused with the spirit of their hometown, making it a truly special project for the talented siblings.
