Karla Sofía Gascón Oscars Attendance with Netflix Covering Costs

Karla Sofía Gascón, nominated for an Oscar for her role in “Emilia Pérez,” will be attending the Academy Awards this Sunday. Netflix will cover her costs as part of the support they provide for all nominees who travel to Los Angeles for the ceremonies.

Gascón, the first openly transgender woman to receive an Oscar nomination, kept a low profile in the United States after some past social media posts resurfaced. She deactivated her account and issued an apology, although she later gave an unauthorized interview to CNN en Español and continued posting on social media.

While Netflix had not been in touch with Gascón since early February and shifted focus away from her for their promotional campaigns in the US and UK, she did not attend various events during the US awards season. The director Jacques Audiard and Zoe Saldana have distanced themselves from Gascón in public comments.

The controversy surrounding Gascón has led to speculation about the impact on her Oscar prospects, with her odds decreasing from frontrunner to outsider. Despite this, “Emilia Pérez” has been recognized at the Baftas with awards for best film not in the English language, and Saldana winning best supporting actress.

It is still uncertain whether Gascón will walk the red carpet at the Oscars or give interviews. Screen has reached out to Netflix for comment.
