Peacock Census Results at KBR Park on December 3

Over 100 nature enthusiasts gathered at the KBR National Park in Hyderabad to conduct a census of the peacock population, with the results set to be revealed during the upcoming Peacock Festival on December 3. Last year’s count tallied up to 565 peacocks, and this year’s participants, including forest officials, KBR staff, walkers, and members of various NGOs, divided into groups and embarked on the census from 7 to 8 am.

Each group utilized transect lines to ensure precise observations of the peacock population throughout the park. Avinash Visvanathan from FossSociety explained that these straight paths are essential for accurately tracking wildlife in natural landscapes. Walking in a single file helps minimize any disruptions that could affect the findings.

The census covered all areas of the park, including visitor trails, to provide a comprehensive map of the wildlife. Transects were strategically planned to encompass every landscape within the park, ensuring a thorough assessment of the peafowl population, even in areas with fewer bird sightings.

In previous years, the census recorded 544 peacocks in 2022 and 550 in 2021, with hopes for an increase in numbers this year as well. Manjula M, section officer in KBR NP, highlighted the success of this annual activity, which involves a collaborative effort from park officials and dedicated volunteers. Stay tuned for the latest updates on the peacock population at KBR National Park!
